Requirements for The Storage of Firearms and AmmunitionYou will need to check the storage requirements for your state as they vary between Australian jurisdictions.

 

Category A: 

Air rifles, Rimfire rifles other than self loading or shotguns/rimfire combinations

Category B: 

Muzzle loading firearms (other than pistol), centre fire rifles (other than self loading), shotgun centre fire rifle combination

These categories being long arm must be securely stored in a safe which is locked by a quality secure lock. The body and door are constructed of steel and if it weighs less than 150 kilograms when empty must be fixed and anchored to the floor or wall.

If you intend to store more than 15 firearms in the safe then the premises must be fitted with an intruder alarm.

Any cartridge ammunition for the firearm must be secured and stored in a separate lockable safe in which the firearm is stored.

Category C: 

Self loading rimfire rifles with a magazine capacity of no more than 10 rounds.

Self loading shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds

Pump action shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds

Category D:

Self loading centrefire  rifles

Self loading rimfire rifles with a magazine capacity of not more than 10 rounds

Self loading shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds

Pump action shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds

Any firearms to which Category C licence applies

For these categories all requirements apply as per Category A & B but with the following additional conditions as follows the key or opening device to the safe must be carried by the licence holder or kept in a secure separate room from the safe.

Category H:

Pistols & Handguns

Please note that there are different requirements for those who are firearm dealers, sport target shooters and clubs, firearm collectors, antique/heirloom collectors and firearm ammunition collectors.

It would be advisable to look up storage and safekeeping requirements for firearms on the police website in your state.
