Who was the Lord Safe Company?

The Lord Safe Company is a highly respected safe manufacturer throughout the 1970’s, 80’s & 90’s with a factory based in Brookvale Sydney, Australia.

In 1971, API SECURITY acquired the Lord Safe Company and continued safe making at the Brookvale site until 1988 when the factory was relocated from Brookvale to a purpose built plant that boasted a modern 30,000 square feet facility at Taree on the NSW central coast.

Lord Safe Company was well known throughout Australia for their slogan – “Security for the age we live in”. They manufactured a diverse range of safes, vaults and strongroom doors, the new owners being API Security continued manufacturing safes and vaults under the well known and respected Lord Safe Co name.

Lord Safe Co’s extensive range of products included Lord fire rated filing cabinets, Lord drug safes, Lord wall & floor safes, Lord strongroom doors & frames, Lord fire resistant safes, Lord gun & rifle safes, data safes, deposit safes, Lord TDR safes, Lord pre-fabricated modular vaults & vault doors. It’s a testament to the Lord Safe Co name to the skill, quality, and craftsmanship. The Lord Safes made thousands of safes and are still trusted to secure cash, jewellery and other valuables throughout Australia giving the same high protection to rival any safes made today.

In this blog we have listed a large number of Lord safe models that were manufactured and included a brief description of their details.

Let’s start with the well known Lord office or home safe range which included the very popular Sunchief Apache series they come in six versions, being 24, 35, 35E , 40 , 20 , 70 & 150 the Lord Sunchief Apache models 24 35 & 40 are fabricated from 10mm steel plate, and the Lord Apache models 20, 70 & 150 are fabricated from 8mm steel plate they were often referred to as  the magnificent seven and become widely used for the storage of cash, jewellery, and private documents such as passports, deeds, insurance policies, in fact any paper document deemed confidential.

The Lord fire resistant home safe HS series was manufactured in two models being the HS 350, HS440 & HS006 and the other models HS 5, HS 6 & HS 7. The main difference between the two models is the slight variation in the dimensions.

Another well known series of Lord safes are the diplomat home and office safe as it offered both fire and theft protection, and it was available in various sizes & models including the Lord diplomat 119EN, 125EN, 530EN & 006EH. Most people accepted the Lord diplomat safe as a proven effective way to protect valuable and documents against fire and theft.

The Lord Nugget safe is a well respected high security safe for the home or office, it’s been specifically designed to offer a higher level of protection than that of a standard safe the construction of the safe  incorporates a high strength barrier material encased in the body and the safe door has a total thickness of 75mm. Other extra security features the Lord nugget safe included are anti-attack devices being a re-locking mechanism and a hardened anti drill plate guarding the locking mechanism, it was produced in the seven models as follows Lord nugget size 1 , 2 , 3 ,5 , 6 & 7. Although over the years the name and quality of the nugget stayed the same, there was various changes in the dimensions. The Lord nugget was also manufactured as a fire rated safe with a two, three or four draw filing cabinet that could be placed inside of the Lord Nugget FC2, FC3, & FC4.

The Lord Safe company manufactured a large range of in floor safes which were revolutionary at the time, designed as underfloor safes that prove excellent security with the advantage of being concealed. Lord in ground safes could be installed in concrete or wooden floors and proved to be extremely popular so they were manufactured in many versions  including the Lord Falcon underfloor safe, this model came with a round door that incorporated a composite 20mm thick door slab.

The Lord Eagle underfloor safe comes in two models – size one & size two. The only difference was a small difference in dimensions. The door on the Lord Eagle in-the-floor safe was a 12mm steel plate hinge to the body and secured by two moving bolts. Lord also produced a shroud encasement for this floor safe which was called the eagles nest. This enabled a conversion from a under floor safe to a surface mounted safe as the encasement of the shroud was filled with high strength concrete and could be bolted down. Two other in floor safes the Lord Safe company manufacturer where name the Apache and the Nugget capitalising on the names and success of there free standing models of the same name. The Apache and the Nugget where basically manufactured the same in fabrication the main difference was a variation in dimensions and the thickness of the doors as the nugget in floor safe had a 12mm thick steel slab head with hardened plate and relocking devices  had whilst the Apache in floor safe had a 5m steel plate door. Due to the popularity of in floor safes at the time, Lord Safes designed a corner in ground safe specifically manufactured to be installed into corner positions where standard floors safes where impractical to fit so his triangle shape safe had three sides and was ideal for corner areas. Another often requested by customers was an extra large door opening for convenient access for larger items so Lord Safe company produced the in-floor home guard this again offered something different in the in floor safe range. Then there was the Lord Safes companies flagship models being the in floor high security TDR Torch & Drill resistant models including the Lord Nightguard TDR Floor Safe, Lord Maximum TDR Floor Safe, Lord Bullion TDR Floor Safe AND models  WF1 & WF2 TDR Floor Safes and not forgetting there ultimate in floor safe the Lord Fortress being a AA (Anti Arc ) designed door for maximum protection.

Lord wall safes where designed to be installed in brick or plasterboard board walls and because of their compact size they were usually concealed behind wall paintings or other household or office furniture as they were flush fitting steel safes and provided excellent security they where manufactured in three models the Lord wall safe WW1, WW2 & WW3, the only difference between the models was the variation in sizing.

Lord Safe Company was a leading manufacturer and supplier of specifically designed drug safes that were constructed to comply with the Australian Health Department specifications for the legal storage of dangerous and prescription drugs in such places as hospitals, pharmacies, medical clinics,  aged care facilities and other health sectors. The drug safes come in four models being the Lord Drug Safe DC1, DC2, DC3 & DC4  the only difference in models was the dimensions as all were constructed of 10mm thick steel plate and locked by a high security six lever anti pick key.

Lord Safes never forgot the firearm industry and manufactured gun & rifle safes to comply with Australian firearm laws; they produced a three and six storage rifle safe both having a separate lockable ammunition compartment fitted inside.

They were constructed of a 3mm press formed steel plate body and a 5mm thick steel plate door with horizontal bolt work. The Lord pistol safe also designed to comply with Australian firearm specifications was available in three models size 1, 2 & 3 to allow for more storage space of multiple pistols or hand guns they had a 10mm thick steel plate door & body and locked via a high security six lever safe key.
