Helpful Tips on Choosing Your Pre-used Safe

tips on secondhand safes

Purchasing a pre-used safe rather than a new one can help you save a lot of money. However one needs to note that thorough investigation and research as an absolute essential before you make your purchase. Unfortunately there are many poor quality second hand safes on the market that you want to avoid. In order to assist you with finding the best second hand safe to suit your needs, our Safes Experts put together a few tips to help you identify the good secondhand safe that is worth your time and money.

Tip 1. Determine the model and make the safe you’re looking at.
After you determine the make and model, you’re then able to call around and speak with someone that specialises in the field to get an idea of the security level of this safe. You may get a quote to “crack it”, and the safer the safe is, the more expensive it is to crack it open.

Tip 2. Buy younger rather than older
Some people believe that older safes are stronger or better than newer ones. While this is true for some cases, it is not correct in most cases. Most safes built 40 years ago were not built to defend against modern tools such as angle grinders and plasma cutters as they were not built at the time. Sawdust is commonly used to ‘soft fill’ old safes. This type of insulation degrades and settles with time, creating a wider air gap in the safe’s top. The heat from a fire will pass through the exterior steel and into the safe through this air gap. Concrete is commonly used as a fire insulator and a barrier in good modern safes, so this problem can be avoided.

Tip 3. Look for a pre used safe with a combination dial lock or an electronic digital lock
Older safes are generally built with mechanical key lock, so following the rule of thumb in tip 2, a combination or digital lock would mean the safe is more modern and can withstand more modern break-in tools and techniques.

Tip 4. Take into consideration the weight of the safe
A typical modern safe around the size of 700 x 600 x 600mm would generally weigh at least 250kg. This means if a secondhand safe around the same size weighs significantly less than this, the security would be compromised greatly. It is also important to note that heavy safes require a removalist team that is specialised in the moving of security safes due to its heavy weight.
