Fire Resistant Data Storage Boxes

Fire Resistant Data Storage Boxes

Most businesses in Australia use and rely on the computer. In fact, it is difficult to think how we’d be able to conduct business without it. Therefore it is extremely important to store your backups of crucial data safety in a fire resistant data storage safe, to protect your data from the threat of burglary and fire.

Data safes, also known as media safes or media cabinets, are a type of security box or safe that is different from safes or cabinets designed to protect paper. Data safes or data storage boxes are designed so that the inner temperature does not exceed 50 degrees celsius in case of a fire. The heat would damage sensitive material such as tape drives, DVDs, hard drives, USB sticks, and other devices if the internal temperature reaches 70 degrees celsius.

You may hear some fire resistant safes or security storage boxes being referred to as “fireproof”. This is actually misleading information just like the phrase “bullet proof” and “waterproof”, because there is no safe on the market today that is completely fireproof. Security safes have certain levels of fire resistance, which protects the contents within for a certain duration of time. The most common fire resistance found in fire resistant data safes are 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. In most cases, data safes are built to a standard or specification, such as the Underwriters Laboratories UL350. The highest temperature that the test is subjected to, as well as the time, are both listed in this standard.

We used to sell a lot of really large fireproof data storage safes, but as technology advances and data backups get smaller and smaller, we have been getting a lot of requests for smaller fire resisting data storage solutions. There is an increase in popularity for fire resistant storage boxes, particularly the Sentry Safe Fire Chest range.

There are three types of safes in the Sentry Safe Fire Chest range: the CHW30100, the CHW20101, and the SE1200. All three safes were UL Classified for Fire Endurance (1/2-hour at 843°C), to ensure protection of documents and records in the event of a fire; ETL Verified for 1/2-hour fire protection of digital media up to 843°C in the event of a fire; and ETL Verified for water submersion to protect valuable items and documents from flood damage. Their design and security of this range of safety storage boxes make them the ideal solution for protecting your data and documents from fire and flood damage.

When purchasing a fire resistant data safe or safety storage box, you must keep in mind that data safes/cabinets should not be used to store valuables. Also, if you want to protect data and media files, a fire resistant safe designed to protect paper is not suitable for protecting data in most cases. If you’re not sure about which data safe is most suitable for you, just  give us a call on 1300 764 971, and our safe experts will be happy to help you.
